The world is split into 5 planes. Hell, The Underworld, The Overworld, Olympus and finally, Heaven. Things begin in Olympus, where Himeros, god of sexual desire and Thanatos, god of non-violent death had fallen in love. Himeros confided in his cousin and best friend, Cupid, who told him it may be wrong but love was complicated and would simply do what it wanted. However, once Zeus found out about their relationship, he demanded they break up or be banished to the underworld to withhold the balance of Olympus. Every god must fulfill their purpose, nobody must step out of line. Thanatos very quickly ended things with Himeros and it sent him into a rage. He believed that this was a plot against him, to finally get rid of him and replace him with his younger brother, Eros. He set out for the assasination of Zeus, not knowing the impact it would have on the plane. Very quickly, every God fell out of order, beginning to go against their own morals, beliefs and purpose with no one to guide them. They all had one goal in common, however, they wanted Himeros dead. Himeros fled to the underworld where he’d be stuck as a wondering ghost for years until finding a soul vulnerable enough to possess. That soul being Levi’s.Levi was only a small child when it happened, his family becoming afraid of his new found capabilities. His brother Lucas, though, was able to teach him grounding methods to calm the stress and avoid triggers of his powers. The main one being fire. That leads to his 12th birthday. His parents lit the candles, but the flame was bigger than anticipated and something inside of him lost control, leading to an explosion and a house fire that only him and his brother managed to survive. He fled the scene and ran through various streets until he reached an area he had never seen before. It was dirty and polluted. He sat under a tree trying to calm himself down and that’s when a girl found him.Danny grew up in poverty and faced a lot of backlash for wanting to serve the army as a girl. She had researched a lot about different species and hellborn capabilities but this was something she had never seen before. They started talking and became close friends.Once Levi and his brother were admitted to the orphanage, Lucas hated him. In fact, the whole town hated him, called him a monster despite being a child, but his brother hated him the most. It was like he completely flipped and wasn’t showing signs of changing. Lord Kerrim demanded Levi have his soul sold off, to ensure nothing like this would happen again. And so he did, he didn’t know who his soul was sold to but although his godly capabilities were gone, he couldn’t escape the title as the town freak.Years later, Levi was 18 and had left the orphanage. Nobody wanted to offer him a job due to his reputation, apart from Kerrim who happily gave him a job, luring in and killing the scums of the earth who needed to go to hell. And to his surprise, he was paired with Danny who he lost contact with during his last year in the orphanage.3 years later, they got promoted. There was a young human boy on Earth that Kerrim needed to find and it was now their job to find him.
All throughout Max’s childhood, his mother would tell him disturbing stories of an abandoned train station in the woods, warning him away from it, so he wouldn’t go missing there like her father did. In fact, the last thing her father told her before he went missing was: “When you have a child, make sure they don’t end up like me.”Present day, Max is upset with the way things are at college. He’d been outed as trans and was now being treated like shit because of it, and those who don’t chose to patronise him and act like he needs special treatment due to his ‘condition’ (what?). His only friend, Felix, even leaves him because of the sudden attention so he tries to fail on purpose but his grades climb higher and higher without even needing to try due to the teachers that ‘feel bad’ for him. He gets high one night and has a dream of the exact train tracks his mother had warned him away from and there he meets a man who promises him a carefree life of glories and gifts as long as he boards the train with him.Max blacks out and wakes up in bed, it had gone past noon and he was late for his therapy appointment so he scrambled out of bed and headed for the door. He doesn’t see his typical therapist though, he sees Levi, who isn’t very fit for the job…“I think I saw you in my dream last night.”
“How peculiar. I must just have one of those faces :)”After that, he begins to see trains everywhere like it’s a sign, and when one more day of college throws him over the edge, he dismantles his window and dips.Once he gets to the train station, Levi is sitting there, waiting for him, almost like he knew exactly that this was going to happen. In that same moment, the train rolls into the station and Max is met with the simple question of ‘are you coming?’ The train takes them through a long, dark tunnel and out the other end is a completely different world. One he’d never even heard of - almost like hell but with less torture and eternal fire. He was in the Underworld. It also seemed that as soon as they passed through the tunnel, Levi’s skin changed to a deep red along with horns and long, dark hair. It scared the shit outta him for sure. “You’re… a demon!?” But Levi just shrugged with a smug grin. He had a feeling there’d be much more for him to be afraid of where they were going.Levi took him to this large throne room and presented him to a man titled ‘Lord Kerrim’ whom he had to bow down to. Kerrim and Levi discussed something privately and when Levi returned he told Max that he has to live with him in his home on Earth until Kerrim is ‘ready for him’.
When they got back to the house, Max discovered that him and Levi wouldn’t be living there alone, there was a woman there too called Danny. And while Levi spent the majority of his time on Earth disguised as a human, Danny stayed as a demon basically 24/7 which of course gave Max the creeps but…Up until the near end of season 1, the main 3 characters (Max, Levi and Danny) get up to lots of things while living together and bonding closer, almost like family.During these events, we discover that Levi didn’t stop killing pedophiles and other kinds of shitty people when he got that promotion, he found himself to actually quite enjoy it and treats it as a hobby, kind of like what hunting deer is to a redneck. We also meet Levi’s brother, Lucas who storms in on Levi’s birthday - the 10 year anniversary of their house fire - with a birthday cake and candles of which he ‘accidentally’ drops on the carpet in an attempt to trigger another episode and set Levi’s new house on fire with his new family inside of it.It’s in this same moment that it’s revealed Lucas and Danny were actually high school sweethearts and it seems someone (cough cough Lucas…) is still butt hurt about being dumped. We also find out that Levi’s constant eerily cheerful and optimistic tone is completely fake and he’s had to take pills to make him act that way ever since he was in the orphanage.Speaking of the orphanage, Max finds out, while snooping around in Danny’s bedroom, that the one who owns Levi’s soul has been in front of him that whole time. This causes major discourse between Levi and Danny as they have been friends for all this time and yet she never told him that she has control over his soul. She explains that the reason she kept it a secret was because she wanted him to live a normal life and not to live in constant fear of the things she could do to him.Kerrim is finally ‘ready’ for Max.Levi and Danny bring Max back to the throne room but this time, they wait outside. Kerrim tells Max to sit before explaining that as his grandson, it’s up to Max to lead the Underworld when he passes and that it’s best to start early. He explains that when he got to the Underworld due to his thousands in debt and unfinished business with Hades, he decided that instead of sitting around and waiting for his punishment, he had to act. And so he successfully assassinated Hades and anyone who got in his way and became the new ruler. However, Max noticed that as Kerrim’s rule progressed, his rules on his people got stricter and confusing. It started with people being arrested for speaking out against him until people were being executed because of their social class or sexuality. He even explained how he had to quickly wipe out Levi’s abilities as soon as he heard about them as he knew they would become a problem further down the line. He explained in detail how he set up a plot to push Levi to cause an accident on his 12th birthday so his soul would be sold and better yet, Levi would be exiled from the cities. Nobody wanted him around - not now that they knew he was a monster. He was even ‘generous’ enough to offer Levi a job when all other businesses turned him down, a job on Earth, far away from the Underworld, away from Kerrim.Wait- Grandson? Kerrim is the one who told Max’s mother to not allow him to go to the train tracks, however, once the power got to his head he wanted to maximise his reign on the Underworld and dismissed his previous worries as he thought it would grant him the power he wanted. Max refused. He said he didn’t want to follow in the footsteps of a tyrannical dictator. That’s when things got violent and Levi and Danny ran in to save him having heard the commotion. They leave him, saying they’re never coming back, that they’ll stay on Earth forever if they have to. To which Kerrim replies, “Fine by me, you think I want to stay here? Once I brainwash these puny imps into doing my bidding, I’m taking Earth. And when I do, it’ll be your head, Leviathan.”They get back to Earth and when they do, Max tells them everything, especially about how he’s related to Kerrim. They needed to come up with a plan on how to defeat Kerrim, they couldn’t just let their home be destroyed. That’s when Max remembered what Kerrim told him about Levi’s powers. He brought up the idea of breaking the contract on Levi’s soul with him and Danny and she thought it would be worth a shot but it was difficult to get him to agree. He couldn’t stop thinking about how much harm he had caused in the past but he reluctantly agreed if there was a chance at saving the Underworld. His returning abilities came as a shock to him. Even if he was repressing them like hell, his senses were heightened. His pills didn’t even work anymore as the immortal half of his body couldn’t absorb them and when he tried to take more it only made him throw up. The fact he couldn’t control his powers also led to him breaking things around the house by mistake and so he locked himself in the basement until he could get it under control. He didn’t know what to do, it had been 10 years since he had last dealt with this kind of situation. He only knew one person who would be able to help him, but he couldn’t, he shouldn’t. Or that’s what he thought. But unbeknownst to him, Lucas called first. He apologised for everything, for abandoning him and for how he acted on Levi’s birthday. He just wanted to explain everything in person and to help defeat Kerrim. It sounded like a trap and it very well could’ve been but Levi was sure he was going to die either way if he didn’t learn to control his powers so he got Max and Danny to leave the house for the day and invited Lucas over to talk.Lucas explains his experience working for Kerrim, the way he taught Lucas how to live and took him in after losing his parents. He was manipulated into trusting him and building a bond with him. He explained how Kerrim pushed him to harass Levi on his birthday, and of course that’s no excuse, he takes full accountability. He wants to help and he wants to change.Levi doesn’t fully forgive him but he accepts the help and together they learn new grounding methods to control his abilities. Lucas tells him that in exactly one week’s time, Kerrim will throw a parade where he will unleash a brainwashing spell over the Underworld and as difficult as it was for him to leave his role behind, he refuses to stand by and allow the people he loves to be manipulated. Of course it’s difficult for Max and Danny to trust him, but considering they know they have very little time, they accept it for now and say they’ll pick it up later.During that week, they come up with a plan to infiltrate the parade and break into Kerrim’s castle where Levi can take him down and they can all expose him to the Underworld for what he is.The plan goes fairly well at first, but Kerrim anticipated this. He already put measures in place to prevent Levi from doing any harm, tranquilisers and a special chain that disallowed any magic usage (up to Kerrim’s ability) to take place. The others were detained and although they tried to fight, there was nothing they could do without Levi spearheading the attack. How could they go so wrong? Levi was going to die there. He was going to die a freak of nature, unable to save the people he loves, yet again.“Hey, kid. You need to wake up.”Levi wakes up in a completely black void. He sees, or, hallucinates, his mother, his father, his dog. He couldn’t save them. Max, Danny, Lucas. He can’t save them. Not anymore.“Hey, stop looking at that stuff. It’ll make you go places you don’t want to.”A light purple wispy, fiery man stood before him. He introduces himself as Himeros, explains that he is the source of Levi’s abilities and tries to convince Levi to put him in the driver’s seat.“I can’t.” He says. “I don’t want to hurt any more people.”
“But they are all going to die if you don’t.”Levi wakes up in the castle, his friends around him trying to fend off Kerrim on their own. Except, it isn’t Levi. Himeros breaks the chains and elegant light purple wings sprout from his back. He greets Kerrim like an old friend and then uses his powers to completely annihilate him to ash.Together, they stand up in front of everybody and expose Kerrim as the monster he is. And Levi, previously the town’s freak, is now named a hero along with everybody else. However, with Kerrim gone, it’s time for Max to go home and leave his old friends behind.
